Chapter Seven

THE NEXT morning when Luc and I went down to breakfast, I was surprised by how many people were there just milling around, others sitting, like at the beginning of a convention, everyone getting coffee and doughnuts while they waited around to be called into the room where the speaker was going to be.

“Oh,” Luc said, tipping his head toward the enormous arched doorway, “the comte.”

Turning, I saw Moreau crossing the room to me, followed dutifully by Jean Michel, Eric, and several guards.

“Good morning,” I greeted him.

“Good morning,” Moreau replied tightly before several people moved quickly from the sides of the room, more guards I’d missed, and surrounded Luc and me.

“What’s this?” I asked, my tone frigid.

“I’m sorry,” Moreau said, and he actually sounded sad. “But Gabriel has arrived early, and because I can’t communicate with him, I can’t ask him to wait.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I know.” He sighed, his eyes pained. “But I need you to go outside and greet the gardien de la parole and see if you can speak to him.”

“Right now?”

“Yes.” He swallowed hard, and I realized that along with being sorry, he was frightened.

“So, is this guy going to hurt me?”

“I don’t know.”

I nodded. “I could die.”

He wouldn’t meet my gaze.

“Oh, fuck no,” Luc snarled.

“Subdue him,” Moreau commanded.

I moved fast, slipping in front of the man I loved. “He’ll meet Gabriel with me.”

Moreau shook his head. “Gabriel will most certainly kill him.”

“You’re sending me to meet him, and I could die,” I reminded him. “What’s Luc to you?”

“I would keep him safe—for you.”

I shook my head. What the hell kind of crap was he shoveling and where the hell did he get off thinking I was this gullible? “You don’t care about him or me. We’re here because of what I am, not who I am.”

“That’s not true!” he barked. “You’re my son!”

“I’m a Romanus, and that’s the part you care about,” I argued. “Tell me where to go so we can get this over with.”

He pointed outside toward the covered patio.

Grabbing Luc’s hand without thinking, I meant to lead the way, but when Luc closed the door behind him, the sound jogged me and my brain kicked in. I rounded on him fast. “Crap, you should go back inside.”

One eyebrow rose like I was insane.

“I can’t have you hurt.”

“That goes both ways.”

I raked my fingers through my hair. “What’s wrong with me? Why am I not using my head? Why am I just reacting?”

“It’s your instincts.”

I met his gaze. “What?”

“Normally you’d do what your brain says. You would worry most about me getting hurt, so you’d have made me stay inside.”

I nodded as I lifted my hand to his cheek.

“But now, with so many gargoyles around that you don’t know—all you want is me with you, so I won’t be taken away.”

I bristled, my fingers sinking into his hair, cupping the back of his head, holding on. “You need to stay right beside me.”

“I know,” Luc said with a warm chuckle, stepping into me, taking my face in his big hands, tilting my head back to kiss me.
